Win it! CNE Tickets

cne-logo

The CNE rolling into town is simultaneously exciting and sad to me. Sad because summer is ending, but exciting because the CNE is back!

The CNE is a long standing tradition for me, and summer just wouldn’t be complete without riding the Ferris wheel, visiting the sprawling food building or without screaming that yes, I do want to go faster on the Polar Express. In addition to all of your favourites, here are some new things to expect this summer.

West Coast Lumberjack Show: This “chock-a-block” 45-minute show features mighty lumberjacks who will compete and showcase high-energy stunts including: Axe Throwing, Chainsaw Carving, Underhand Chop, Pole Climbing and Log Birling on water!

Food Truck Frenzy:  The CNE hosts one of Canada’s largest food truck rallies on August 28August 30. Foodies can rejoice in unique offerings from 23 of Toronto’s trendiest food innovators featuring internationally inspired fare and indulgent treats that have become part of the CNE experience.
Craft Beer Fest:  Enjoy a refreshing cold one in the heart of the Food Truck Frenzy featuring 11 regional master craft brewers.

Concerts:  Catching a concert at the CNE Bandshell is the best way kick-start an evening at the Fair. This year’s line-up spans the entire musical spectrum, headlining some of music’s hottest acts including Alan Doyle, Cody Simpson, Brett Kissel, Tokyo Police Club, MKTO, Dallas Smith to name a few, as well as classic icons America, Chubby Checker, Rick Springfield and Foghat.

Bon Voyage! Acrobatic & Ice Skating Show: Canadian ice dancers and Olympic gold medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir star in a new Acrobatic & Ice Skating Show inside Ricoh Coliseum.

Celebrity Chef Stage:  Canada’s top chefs take to the stage inside the Enercare Centre, formerly Direct Energy Centre, to share tips, cooking demos and their diverse culinary perspectives with foodies alike. Chefs Lynn Crawford, Bob Blumer, Michael Smith, Chuck Hughes and Vikram Vij are some of the food superstars participating.

The PC Financial Sky Ride: The Sky Ride returns to the CNE, extending 40 feet above ground, transporting riders across the grounds with breathtaking panoramic views of The Midway, Lake Ontario, and the Toronto skyline.

Coleman Get Outside Day

Coleman has a great new initiative that’s happening this week! Get Outside Day, is a movement to encourage the Canadian government to declare Friday, July 17th a national holiday. The reason? To give everyone more time to get outside!

I think we’re all a little guilty of neglecting the outdoors sometimes. I am not exempt from this. Last Friday my boyfriend picked me up for our typical date night. I thought that we would just head to the movies and grab something to eat. I realized he was driving in the totally opposite direction from the theatre. When I asked where he was going, he simply replied, “It’s a beautiful day. Let’s go to a park.” So we did! We went to Presqu’ile Provincial Park and had an amazing time hanging out by Lake Simcoe.

Why don’t we all do this more often? Sometimes we simply don’t have the time, or just grow used to doing the same indoor activities. (more…)

Top 10 Summer Festivals in Toronto

I just love summer in Toronto. It seems like every weekend there’s a new festival or event going on. Here are the festivals that I go to every summer, and never miss.

Luminato: June 19th to June 28th

10 days jam packed with art, music, food and dance. Luminato brings together interactive performances, visual displays, literary talks and more each year. Tons of fun.

Summerlicious: July 3rd to July 26th

This year, Summerlicious is bigger than ever! Featuring 210 restaurants, enjoy prixe fixe menus at different restaurants all over the city, starting at $18 for a 3 course lunch.

Beaches Jazz Festival: July 10th to July 26th

This festival includes a street festival, farmers market and a Taste of Jazz food truck event! Of course, all the while you’ll be listening to live jazz from players from around the world.

Night It Up!: July 24th to July 26th

This night market gives you a taste of a traditional night market in Asia. There will be over 120 food and merchandise vendors selling street food and more! Are you brave enough to try the deep-fried stinky tofu?

Caribana: July 30th to August 2nd

Toronto’s vibrant Island community comes to life during this fun summer festival featuring dance, music and good eats. It all comes to a head for the massive parade on August 1st, complete with costumes, colourful floats and live music.

Scarborough Rib Festival: July 31st to August 3rd

If you are a BBQ lover, then you’re in luck! Vendors pack Thompson Park, selling ribs, pulled pork, chicken wings, brisket, corn bread and more. This year the festival is celebrating 14 years!

Taste of the Danforth: August 7th to August 9th

Prepare to be stuffed at this annual Greek festival! Booths line the streets of Danforth Ave filled with gyros, roast quail, skewers of meat, loukoumades and so much more.

Waterfront Night Market: August 14th to August 16th

This night market is downtown, and is hosted by T&T. Enjoy Asian street food eats, just like a traditional night market with live music.

Canadian National Exhibition: August 21st to September 7th

The CNE needs no introduction. This massive carnival includes a midway filled with rides and games, musical performances and my favourite- the Food building.

Toronto International Film Festival: September 10th to September

This marks the end of the summer for me. This is your best chance to spot a celebrity in the city, and to see little known films and blockbusters alike. Be sure to get your tickets early!

Are there any festivals that you love that I missed?
