Maybelline’s Color Whisper

Maybelline has some glossy new shades that go on sheer. During Fashion Week at Rachel Sin, this is what the models wore down the runway! I was excited to give it a try. This lipstick goes on like a gloss. Maybelline used a gel based formula for a lighter feel and translucent look.

I tried Who Wore It Red-er. It went on smooth and glossy, which was great. This colour is a soft strawberry pink tone, and wasn’t as red as I expected. The colour lasted long and I can see it being a great shade for spring! With 20 shades to choose from, it’s easy to find your perfect match. Check them out!

Unwinding at the Hammam Spa

The Hammam Spa is a welcome oasis from the hustle and bustle of King Street West.
When you step inside, everything is still and calm. And you feel almost instantly better.

I am greeted and shown into the change room. Inside my wooden locker is a wrap and a towel.

I had a brief tour of the spa and was shown a small sitting room where I could relax between treatments (a quick peek at this showed couples canoodling and people sipping tea) and the way to the Hammam.

” “Hammam” translates to “Ritualistic Bath”, and it’s a traditional Turkish bath. Turkish Baths traditionally functioned as steam-filled grottos for segregated social gatherings of the upper classes. Women and men would lounge among themselves, enjoying fragrant steam and luxurious body treatments while discussing politics and gossip.”

This spa features a 500 square foot urban Hammam. It’s co-ed and feels like a natural grotto with black slate surfaces and lit onyx bowls that hold iced towels and cold water to cool down. Eucalyptus oils are diffused in the Hammam, which helps to relax the muscles.

I was excited to try it! I was warned that it could get quite hot (90 degrees at its peak!) so if I felt uncomfortable I was welcome to try it in short bursts. When I went inside, I had the whole place to myself (yes!) and it was incredibly relaxing, warm and soothing. I feel like I definitely sweated out some toxins. As someone who finds it hard to breathe in saunas, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to handle the Hammam, but I was! It didn’t bother me at all.

After a bit, I was called in for my treatment. There are a variety of treatments available.  I had decided to get the Argan Oil Massage ($155). Argan Oil comes from Morocco and has tons of excellent properties. It promotes anti-aging, protects your skin and hair and can help with blemishes. My massage therapist was very receptive to my needs and adjusted the pressure for me if I thought it was too hard (I’m a wimp.) It was the best massage I ever had! I left feeling refreshed and super relaxed. When I was done, I enjoyed a cup of tea and some dried fruit in the sitting room.

If you are getting stressed out during your holiday shopping, just pop into this spa, take a moment in the steam room, maybe get a treatment…and continue with your day. You’ll feel so much better!

Hammam Spa is located on 602 King Street West.

Backstage at The Collections with MAC & Aveda

I was invited to go backstage with MAC Cosmetics and Aveda during the Collections! Wow, is it ever busy back there. I spent some time watching a M∙A∙C makeup artist get a model ready for the Label  show and explain the vision for the show. The model was prepped to have glowing, natural “California girl” skin. This was achieved by using MAC Care Blends Essential Oils and MAC Taupe Shape Powder Blush.

My favourite part of the look was the bright pop of colour that was added at the end. Each model got a bright, almost neon orange on the lips or eyes.

Aveda was backstage styling hair. The styles that they were creating were sleek rope braids.

Tips Nail Bar were also on hand to give the girls stick on half glitter manicures. They looked great!

Going backstage was lots of fun, thanks MAC & Aveda!  I’ll be going backstage during Fashion week too. Can’t wait!

Get Nailed!

Nail polish is one of my favourite things right now. Nothing screams summer like brightly polished nails!
A great new line of polishes has launched in Toronto. Get Nailed is a saucy new line of colours from the lady behind The Ten Spot, Kristen Wood. I tried out some of their products!

Get Nailed lacquer come in a host of yummy, fashionable shades. I particularly liked “Yep, that’s impressive,” (Tiffany Blue) and “Got an Extra Toothbrush?” As you can see, they probably have the most hilarious names that you’ll ever see adorning the bottom of a polish.
With names like, “Your place…or my car?”, “You want me to what!?” and the slightly disturbing, “Shh, you’ll wake my dad!”, these names are one of a kind and just a little bit dirty. You can submit your own polish names, and it might be chosen! Get Nailed isn’t just about naughty names and funky colours. They are proudly big four free. The polishes do not contain Formaldehyde, Toluene, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) OR camphor, which is great.

The nail polish went on smooth and dried fast. One of the things I liked most about this polish is that it came off easily with nail polish remover. I hate it when it’s hard to remove. The Get Nailed line includes a quick dry top coat and a base coat.

My favourite part of the Get Nailed line are the Microbeads! I’ve been dying to try these. The microbeads come in a variety of colours. My favourite is the black! You can buy a single pot of the beads for $6.00, or you can get a set for $20. The set includes super easy to follow instructions, a polish with matching microbeads, an orange wood stick and a mini nail file. I tried out “Love me a Silver Fox,” and it was so much fun to use.

After painting my nail, I tipped a small amount of beads onto the polish. I carefully pressed them into my nail with the orange wood stick and sealed the beads by running a clear coat of polish over the edge of my nail. The effect was funky and fun! The beads didn’t last that long for me, but I am particularly hard on my nails. I can’t wait to try to black! I love that these microbeads are more affordable than Caviar, and from Toronto!

If you are looking to try some new polishes with awesome shades, please give Get Nailed a try!
