It’s officially fall. Pumpkin Spice Lattes have come out of the woodwork, and there’s a definite chill in the air. With fall comes good things, like the harvest, wine and pie!
LCBO’s Taste Local program is now in full swing. This is an annual celebration of Ontario’s wines, available in stores from September 14 to October 11. LCBO kicked off the season in style with a Pie & Local Wine event.
The event featured wines from 4 of Ontario’s popular wine growing regions. I’m going to tell you my favourite wine of the night and the featured pie from that region.
Lake Eerie North Shore
My favourite wine of the entire evening was the Colio Estate Late Harvest Vidal. This was my first time tasting this medium sweet wine and it became an instant favourite. At $11.95 per bottle, it’s an affordable indulgence.
The Henry of Pelham Riesling Icewine was a very close second. This deliciously sweet wine is an excellent dessert wine.
Prince Edward County
The stellar wine that I had in this region was the Grange of Prince Edward Gamay. This red wine is light, fruity and dry. I especially liked that it didn’t leave any lingering tannins on my tongue.
The adorable Lollipop Tandoori Chicken Pie from the Sweet and Savoury Pie Company that it was paired with was my favourite pie. It had just the right amount of spice and a bit of sweetness from the crust. Yum.
Niagara on the Lake
I woefully missed this Sour Cherry Pie from Wanda’s Pie in the Sky, but I’m sure it was fantastic. What I didn’t miss was the wine!
My favourite wine from this region was the Jackson-Triggs Black Series Meritage VQA. This Merlot Cabernet blend is medium bodied and smooth with a fruity flavour.
I bet after reading this, you’re ready to drink some wine! The LCBO has 173 wines featured for Taste Local just waiting for you to drink them. In addition to finding special tastings in your local LCBO store, they will also be hosting a couple of events!
