Do you love homestyle cooking that uses quality ingredients? A new restaurant called Farmr in the St Lawrence Market area is serving up delicious meals.
The concept behind Farmr is simple, rustic homestyle cooking that changes with the seasons. The menu is set up in a way that’s different from most restaurants. Guests will choose a protein, a base and sides for their meal.
The standard proteins are chicken, brisket, turkey meatballs and chickpeas. When I went the special was herb crusted salmon topped with a fresh herb crust after cooking. Sausages, pork loins and chicken have all been some of the main proteins in the past.
Once you chose your meat, you choose a base of Canadian grains, smashed new potatoes or salad greens. Sides include roasted sweet potato, Ontario mushrooms and kale. These can also change with the seasons.
To start, I had a bowl of creamy tomato soup ($3.99). An excellent way to start a meal, the soup was thick and great for the beginning of fall. It was served with a slice of sourdough bread.
Above is the Classic Farmr Plate ($12.99) with Hay Roasted Chicken with Chimuchurri sauce, corn on the cob and smashed new potatoes. The chicken was incredibly juicy and was the perfect sized portion.
This is the Little Farmr Plate ($10.99). The 12 hour Smoked Brisket (with Montreal spice and maple BBQ) packed a tasty punch. I loved the crisp edges of beef, and the sauce.
The restaurant is small, with shared seating and a pretty outdoor patio. A large portion of their business is catering, so they have a big kitchen and prep space.
In addition to coffee and tea, wine, beer and cider are available. Farmr also has tasty baked goods that are made with organic grain flour with reduced sugar. Desserts don’t use white sugar, and instead stick with molasses or brown sugar. They have an amazing whole wheat chocolate chip cookie! So good.
If you’re looking for a sweet finish, try the crumble. The ingredients are seasonal, and lucky for me, that meant apples.
Warm oats, apples and cinnamon were topped with a fresh vanilla cream. This was the perfect way to end this fantastic meal. Take a look at the whole menu here!
Farmr is at 140A The Esplanade.
