Summer Cottage Social at the Ritz-Carlton DEQ Patio

There’s no other way to say this. It’s crazy insane hot outside. It’s hitting 33 degrees almost every day this week. The nice thing about the hot weather, is that it’s a great excuse to hang out on a patio under a giant umbrella, sipping a cool drink. Enter the DEQ Terrace and Lounge at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. I went to the launch of their new summer menu, and to welcome their new executive chef.

Executive Chef Murray McDonald is a friendly and talented chef that hails from Newfoundland. He was formerly the Executive chef at the famed Fogo Island. Chef McDonald is introducing some new seafood dishes to the menu, and Canadian fare using local ingredients.

The newly launched patio menu has a slew of new dishes. There are dips, tacos, and of course, seafood. The fresh Seafood Platter ($67) featuring oysters, Atlantic crab, mussels, white fish ceviche and cold water shrimp.

I couldn’t resist trying one of my favourite apps, fresh Burrata ($22). Here, burrata is served with grilled housemade sourdough bread and a fantastic tomato jam. The bread is perfect for sopping up the gooey mozzarella cheese.

If you’re looking for something a little lighter, the Tuna Tartar ($18) arrives fringed with crispy taro chips, lettuce wraps and is served with a black pepper jam.

Another favourite of mine were the Truffle Frites ($16). The fresh truffle and generous sprinkles of Parmigiano Reggino cheese were the stars here. Dip the fries in the black garlic aioli, and you’ll be in heaven.

Of course, it’s not just about the food. The patio has a selection of cool drinks to keep away the heat. ll of their signature drinks feature Grey Goose. The drink that I couldn’t put down was the Silly Goose ($19). It’s made with muddled cucumber, Grey Goose Le Citron Vodka, Salted Watermelon juice, lemon juice and cinnamon syurp. The drink is fruity and refreshing, with a sweet finish thanks to the cinnamon. It’s like a boozy slushy.

The signature drink of summer on the DEQ patio is Le Grand Fizz ($21). You can choose your poison (in this case, what flavour of Grey Goose Vodka you prefer) and it’s mixed with St. Germain, fresh citrus, and soda. It’s pairs well with food, and is a nice light summer drink.

The patio is the perfect place to hang out with your friends this summer. Check out the menu!

DEQ Terrace & Lounge is at 181 Wellington St W, Toronto, ON M5J 2H5.
